GTA 6 launch prep checklist: console, storage, preload and age ratings
GTA VI launches November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our checklist separates what's confirmed from what's open: preload from November 12, no official download size, whether to pre-order, age ratings and parental controls.
In short
Rockstar Games is releasing GTA VI on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only; no PC version has been announced. If you pre-order digitally or buy the code-in-a-box retail version, you can preload starting November 12. Whether Rockstar specifies a start time for the preload is disputed, and there's no official region-by-region unlock schedule for November 19. The download size is also unknown, and since no version ships with a disc, you'll need an internet connection and plenty of free storage either way. The ESRB rates the game M (Mature 17+), while, according to German gaming outlets, the USK had not issued a rating as of October 2, 2026.

With about five weeks to go, plenty of numbers are making the rounds about file sizes, unlock times and age ratings. This checklist separates what Rockstar Games, Take-Two and the rating boards have confirmed from what's still open (as of October 14, 2026); for the bigger picture, head to our GTA 6 hub.
Your checklist
- Now: Confirm your platform: PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- Now: Sign in with the right PlayStation or Xbox account and check your payment details.
- Now: Decide whether to buy and which edition; check the price in your store and note the bonus cutoff (digital purchase before November 20, 2026; physical copies when pre-ordered, while supplies last).
- After a digital purchase: Check whether the GTA+ month continues as a paid membership.
- By November 12: Set up parental controls for child accounts and secure your own account.
- By November 12: Free up storage and leave room for updates.
- By November 12: Turn on automatic updates and check your internet connection.
- From November 12: Redeem your retail code once you have it and check that the preload is running.
- On November 19: Wait for the unlock (time not confirmed).
Console: PS5 or Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar lists only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as platforms. No version has been announced for PS4, Xbox One or PC. Rockstar and Take-Two haven't confirmed a GamesBeat report (October 13, 2026, citing anonymous sources) that a PC version is planned for the first quarter of 2027; we're tracking it in our news section. Because Rockstar names “Xbox Series X|S,” both Xbox models are covered.
Account: your PlayStation or Xbox account
The digital version, the Ultimate Edition upgrade and code redemption all go through the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store; according to Rockstar Support, retail codes can be redeemed as soon as you receive them. Place pre-orders and redeem codes on the account you actually plan to play on. Whether GTA VI also requires a Rockstar Games account or a link to Social Club is something Rockstar hasn't stated in the information we've reviewed, so treat it as open.
Storage: planning without an official number
Rockstar hasn't published an install size or a download size, and there's no word on a day-one patch. According to GamingBible (October 12, 2026), the figures circulating online are estimates, not official numbers. One fact does matter for planning: Rockstar says the physical version is a code in the box (“A disc will not be included in the box”), and a later disc release hasn't been officially announced. That means the full game reaches your console as a download, whichever version you buy.
- Uninstall games you're not currently playing ahead of time, but make sure your saves are backed up first.
- Leave headroom: it's unknown whether a launch patch is coming and how large it might be.
- Go by the size your console shows once the download starts, not by circulating figures.
Internet, preload and updates
Rockstar confirms that digital pre-orders can begin preloading on November 12, 2026, and according to Rockstar Support, the retail version goes on sale the same day, explicitly “to support pre-loading.” The start time is disputed: some outlets, including IBTimes UK and Beebom, cite Rockstar Support as saying “midnight local time.” Rockstar used that phrase in its Newswire for the pre-order launch on June 25, but reports disagree on whether it also applies to the preload. Until Rockstar clearly confirms it, treat the time as open.
Rockstar hasn't published a region-by-region unlock schedule for November 19 either; according to GamingBible, the tables of regional times come from store country settings and fan compilations. Early access hasn't been announced, and preloading only means the data is already on your console.
Take-Two describes GTA VI as a “single-player experience” (June 24, 2026, announcement), and no online mode has been announced, so whether you'll need a console online subscription is open. You'll still need an internet connection for buying, redeeming codes, preloading and updates. Turn on automatic updates in your system settings and connect your console to the internet at least once before launch.
Pre-order or wait?
Whether you pre-order is up to you; we don't recommend one option over the other. Here's where things stand, with sources:
- Prices: Standard Edition $79.99, Ultimate Edition $99.99 (US, per Take-Two). In Germany, PC Games Hardware reports €79.99 and €99.99 in the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store. Check the current price in your local store.
- Bonus: According to Rockstar Support, pre-orders and digital purchases of either edition made before November 20, 2026, include the Vintage Vice City Pack (a ’55 Vapid Stanier with a garage, plus outfits, hairstyles and an exclusive weapon finish). Physical pre-orders include it while supplies last.
- GTA+: Digital pre-orders and, according to Rockstar Support, digital purchases made before November 20, 2026, include one month of GTA+ (the membership for the existing GTA Online, not a GTA VI online mode). The US PlayStation Store listing says the membership auto-renews; we haven't seen Rockstar's own terms or the German store text, so after activating it, check your account for an active subscription and cancel in time if you don't want it.
- Editions: The Ultimate Edition is digital only; if you buy the retail version, you can upgrade later in the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.
That means you can still get the bonus without pre-ordering if you buy digitally before November 20 (Rockstar gives no time or time zone for the cutoff – if you buy on launch day, check the bonus note in the store); if you buy later, you can wait for reports on the finished game. Before you buy, check your store's or retailer's cancellation and return policy.
Age ratings: ESRB, PEGI and USK
- ESRB (US): M – Mature 17+, with the descriptors Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus the interactive element In-Game Purchases. This rating is official.
- PEGI (Europe): According to German site play3.de, store listings show PEGI 18; Xbox reportedly marks it as provisional. A confirmed entry in the PEGI database isn't established, and reports on it contradict each other.
- USK (Germany): As of October 2, 2026, play3.de reported no USK rating yet. German outlets expect USK 18, as with GTA V, but it isn't confirmed.
A USK label in a console store can come from the automated IARC process used by online stores, which is separate from the USK's standard review that results in an entry in its title database. Which route applies to GTA VI is open. We'll update this section once an entry appears.
Parental controls on your console
GTA VI is aimed at adults (ESRB M 17+, a provisional PEGI 18 in store listings according to reports, USK pending). If kids or teens use your console, PlayStation and Xbox both offer family and parental control settings that let adults set age limits for games, spending limits and online features per account. The manufacturers have current instructions: PlayStation Family and the Xbox Family Hub. Set them up before the preload and protect your own account with a PIN or password.
What is not confirmed
- The time the preload starts on November 12, 2026 – the information conflicts.
- The unlock time on November 19, 2026, by region, including Germany.
- Install and download size, and whether there will be a day-one patch.
- Whether GTA VI requires a Rockstar Games account or Social Club.
- Whether the GTA+ month also auto-renews at a cost in the German PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store – only the US PlayStation Store notice is documented.
- Technical differences between PS5 and PS5 Pro, or between Xbox Series X and Series S.
- The USK rating and a confirmed entry in the PEGI database.
- Whether and when an online mode arrives – none has been announced.
- Official console bundles or early access – neither has been announced.
Sources and status
Checked on October 14, 2026. The official basis is Rockstar Games (Newswire release date post, Support: platforms, editions and versions, Support: pre-order details), the Take-Two announcement from June 24, 2026 and the ESRB entry. Reporting from play3.de, PC Games Hardware, GamingBible, GamesBeat and IBTimes UK is labeled as such in the text. If anything changes, we'll update this page; you'll find more under Guides.
